Gaming laptop GPUs are generally power limited, which often results in significant performance losses compared to their desktop contemporaries, especially for higher-powered GPUs. However, a new mod called NvpwrControl aims to increase performance of NVIDIA's latest RTX 50-series gaming laptops by increasing their power targets using baked-in power policies not available to consumers.
The developer, who found the workaround by reverse-engineering NVIDIA's power management path, says that the mod supports the RTX 5070 Ti, 5080, and 5090 GPUs, with 140 W TGP 5070 Ti GPUs getting power targets all the way to 180 W. The 5070 Ti is the GPU with the most robust support so far, with the developer explicitly stating that RTX 5080 and 5090 support is experimental. Purportedly, the RTX 5080 and 5090 should be able to reach as high as 225 W with NvpwrControl, although that doesn't come without risks and caveats. Read full story
